Annual Report 2008
Overview
As I reflect on the continued strengthening of Bethlehem Tertiary Institute (BTI) and its commitment to biblically-based education, I thank God for his protection and guidance. While BTI continues to be challenged by the pressured tertiary operating environment, this has not dampened the dedication of staff or the enthusiasm of students.
There are a number of things that I wish to highlight in my report this year as follows:
As in past years, our graduates continue to be sought-after, with our employment rate continuing to be well in advance of other institutions.
Research is a fundamental component of what we do. After several years as chair of the committee Bev Norsworthy has handed that role over to Andrew Smith. Bev's input and consistent perseverance has contributed an enormous amount to the development of BTI research culture. BTI achieved good outcomes in terms of research this year:
Andrew Smith and Stephen Bright completed externally funded research projects - Andrew, working with the NZ Families Commission, and Stephen with ASCILITE on aspects of e-learning. Richard Cook, with Irene Alexander, published a book 'Interweavings' - on Christian views of Narrative Therapy - with chapters from other BTI staff.
Two staff members, Bev Norsworthy and Marion Sanders, completed their doctoral research studies at Waikato and MacQuarie universities respectively. Congratulations to them both.
Staff involvement in conference attendance has continued, with several staff contributing conference papers. In September, BTI hosted the Australasian Christian Scholars conference. This was a very successful event.
Thus BTI continues to be an institute that embraces academic rigour as well as retaining its relational focus in nurturing students to enable them to achieve their best.
To the Executive Dean, Dr Amy Edwards, and the Senior Managers, I say thank you for guiding BTI during this past year. You continue to strive for excellence and the long-term future of BTI while maintaining the Institute's unique Christian culture and ethos.
I am very aware of the levels of commitment that staff make to BTI, and the impact this has on the lives of our students. It is their dedication and belief in the vision that creates the unique environment of BTI.
To the Board of BTI, and my fellow directors, I have enjoyed our meetings and times together including the opportunity for robust debate. Healthy debate on a Board is fundamental to good governance and will assist us as we refine and implement the strategic plan for the next three-year period.
