Academic Entry Requirements
Intending students for BTI degree programmes should have gained a minimum of three "C" passes in the National Bursary Examination or 42 credits at Level 3, NCEA with a minimum of 14 credits at level 3 or higher in each of two subjects from an approved subject list and a further 14 credits from no more that two additional approved domains (including at least 8 credits at Level 2 in English, 4 credits in Reading and 4 in Writing, and 14 credits at Level 1 or higher in Mathematics for teacher education applicants). This requirement will be assessed on a case by case basis (please see the Provisional Entry section below).
Please note:
Applicants for admission to the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) programme will already hold an appropriate NZ university degree or approved equivalent qualification.
Applicants for BTI diploma programmes will normally have gained 60 credits or more at Level 2 or above in NCEA (or equivalent), although this again will be assessed on a case by case basis.
Mature Student and Provisional Entry
Applicants who are over 21 years of age but who do not possess the required academic qualifications may be admitted on Mature Student Entry provided they meet all other entry criteria.
In all cases where intending students do not comply with the academic entry requirements above, it may be possible to be admitted on the basis of their likely success in the programme. In this situation, students may be offered Provisional Entry whereby their status is reviewed once academic and professional results are available.
Character Requirements
Students should have qualities of personal integrity, diligence and stability as stated in character references. Applicants will be required to grant permission to the Department of Courts to release any information concerning criminal convictions.
Applicants should have empathy with the Christian ethos of the Tertiary Institute, which aims to help students develop a Christian perspective on life and their field of work.
Re-Selection Process
At the end of the first year of study (or in counselling at the end of the Personal and Professional Integration 2 paper), all students undertake a re-selection process related to the multiple entry criteria. Those re-selected then enter the next stage of their programme. (Some may proceed on an interim basis, with a further re-selection review occurring at a later time.)
International Applicants
Overseas applicants will normally be required to show evidence that they have met equivalent academic requirements at college or high school graduate level and have an adequate grasp of English (an average score of IELTS 6.5 across the four categories of speaking, listening, writing and reading, with no score lower than 6.0 will be required), as well as meeting the other admission criteria. All visa requirements for entry into New Zealand as a student must be met. Students will also need to demonstrate adequate health and travel insurance cover.
Recognition of Prior Learning (R.P.L.)
Applicants who have credits from previous tertiary study may apply to have courses or part courses granted recognition for prior learning towards their qualification, provided that these courses are comparable with equivalent Tertiary Institute courses and/or teaching requirements and were undertaken within the last 6 years. Students seeking credit are required to provide transcripts and course outlines for study already undertaken.
