TONGA

The Free Wesleyan Church Education Office (FWC) earnestly desires to improve the education offered in their mission schools. They have a long history of educational provision, but traditionally many of their staff have been unqualified. They saw that offering the opportunity to receive teaching training would be a great step forward. But they also recognised the need for this training to be based in a Christian world view, since their mission as an Education Office is to operate schools which are faithful to Christ's words.

This led them to BTI. Under the leadership of the then Director of the Education Office, Kalipoli Paonga and Melesuipi Latu ( Senior Education Officer) discussions were held about possible ways to work together to fulfil their desire for stronger, transformative schools.

TONGA
The result of these discussions was the introduction of a professional development programme in 2003, offered to twenty teachers, fifteen from the FWC education system and five from Lavengamalie. The programme is designed to be taught part time over four year and is recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) as a recognised qualification.

The participants testify to tremendous growth in their teaching knowledge and skills, since beginning the programme. They are already having marked influence in their classrooms and in their schools. But the most exciting outcome of the programme to date is the growth in their faith, in their personal relationship with Christ, and their willingness to bring their daily lives into alignment with the faith they profess.

Tonga - Early Childhood

BTI is committed to providing a quality Christ-centred programme for the ECE professional training in Tonga that encompasses three critical aspects:

  • Sound ECE pedagogy
  • Integration of Christian Education principles
  • Specifically tailored to the Tongan context

In February of 2008 BTI was approached by the Minister and Director of Education in Tonga and contracted to write the curriculum and conceptual framework for a Diploma of Education in Early Childhood. This diploma forms the basis for all early childhood teacher training in Tonga. Dr Marion Sanders, teacher education lecturer and Director of Offshore Teaching Programmes at BTI, coordinated the writing and collation of the programme in collaboration with key stakeholders in Tonga and input from colleagues.

In July of 2008 the programme commenced at the Tongan Institute of Education with the first 20 students, who had previously all been volunteers as early childhood educators.
